Historical records turned out to contain many versions of the story of the Flying Dutchman. One of the oldest is the story about the Dutch sailors who are very ambitious in the conquest of the oceans. In 1500-1600 the century, long before the British have a strong fleet, the Netherlands known as the conqueror of the seas.

Mentioned that captain Van Straaten is an exemplary captain and vigorous in the sea and ocean, and are willing to risk everything for the sake of the strongest captains. But because of greed and arrogance then Van straaten punished by nature to live permanently on board without being anchored to the pier! Reportedly named his ship The Flying Dutchman often roamed the Cape of Good Hope area in the southern Africa.

In local myths, ghost ship, Van Straaten can pass on the curse. As a result, the fishermen and sailors are encouraged to change course if they ran into the ship owned by Van Straaten.

Furthermore, in 1821 found the first written record about the story of the Flying Dutchman. In one edition of Blackwood's Magazine, published in May in the year, was told that a Dutch fleet was condemned because it has been challenging nature.

Hendrik Van Der Decken is the captain of the fleet. Embryo tragedy of this curse is Van Der Decken ambition to complete the mission discovered the Cape of Good Hope. However, slightly different from the old myth of the Flying Dutchman, Blackwood's Magazine describes more details about the trip the captain. 7 years after the mission is given, Van Der Decken have also discovered the Cape of Good Hope.

Although the crew was feeling desperate, but because the captain has a very explicit nature then no one has dared to oppose his wish. Until one night Van Der Decken managed to find the location of the Cape of Good Hope with the help of a telescope. But to achieve it he must pass in front of him facing the storm. Feeling annoyed Van Der Decken finally swore in strong winds that confronting.

Not long after that a small boat passing by ship Van Der Decken, and fishermen in small boats are commemorating the captain not to go on that night. Rather than comply, or at least respect the suggestions of the fishermen, Van Der Decken back even swore that he would prefer condemned to sail forever until doomsday comes from the need to lose to nature. Immediately After all, no matter how hard the business Van Der Decken but he and his crew could never find a dock to dock. Some stories say that Van der Decken was not condemned and even he almost managed to dock.

But unfortunately all crews affected by the bubonic plague so that they can not be allowed to anchor for fear of transmitting the disease in urban population. Because not get help, the entire crew and the captain eventually died in the voyage at sea. Heart pain made them curious spirit that continues across the sea with the ghost ship. Version lai noted that the ship sadistic killing Van Der Decken that victimized all its inhabitants!

Some other old school historical record says that a Dutch captain Bernard Fokke is suppose to be named captain of the Flying Dutchman other. Fokke was also described as a very skilled captain in the sea. It is reported that Fokke to sail from Holland to Java in just a very short time. This is especially surprising because many parties in those days, the fastest ship just took a long time to reach Java. The smart was later suspected by many people that Fokke actually working with the devil so that his ship to sail fast.
